Des voix de loin de près by Danza Cosmos
Beautifully released in a thick cardboard ecopack Danza Cosmos is a collaborative effort of four musicians, namely:
Laurent Avizou - clarinet, banjo, effects, voice
Heddy Boubaker - electroacoustic guitar
Rodolphe Collange - electro acoustic, synth, effects
Youssef Ghazzal - Double bass.
When Heddy wrote to me about the album I didn't know what to expect but my gut feeling told me it has definitely something to do with improvised music made by people who might have a bit of a background in free jazz or collective improvisation. And having that in mind I started listening which proved only a few of my suspicions.
First track entitled Au hazard du Radar de Ouarzazate comes with a heavy bass reverbration and it definitely sets the tone and the drive of an album. From here it only gets better. Not only the tracks are beautifully and intuitively composed and put together but they have a narrative which, as of contents, may feel tense and tough but the way the musicians lift it is very light and almost poetic.
Le Temps se Découvre is a beautiful example of that when you have a dense sonorous improvisations on the forefront but there is plenty of eerie, disonant background that gives it a second depth, finished off with a great outro.
And there are tracks like Ces Fantômes Inconstants déposaient par Myriades les Gouttelettes d'une Semence Eblouissante where it feels that improvised music is transported into some sort of psychodelic progressive nuance with an electronic layers put on it. It is discordant, it is tense and it really has a sense of film soundscape. And what is most important the sound is uniquely fresh and far away from the cliches of the genre that this album could be easily put into.
Great effort, hopefully followed by another gem of this sort.
