Stefan Prins - Inhabit - by Sub Rosa
Copyright Stefan Prins 2020
I knew Stefan and his work with Nadar Ensemble which prompted my interest in this double cd released by Sub Rosa.
Such material shouldn't be overlooked and not especially because the compositions are complex and pretty long even for a cd as follows
1.
inhabit Inhibition Space #1 (2020) for bass flute, bass oboe, bass clarinet & live-electronics / Ensemble Mosaik 12:19
2.
inhabit_inhibit (2019-21) for four spatialized quartets, six feedback soloists & live-electronics / EnsembleKollektiv Berlin, cond. Max Murray 47:10
3.
under_current (2020-21) for electric guitar and orchestra / Yaron Deutsch & BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, cond. Ilan Volkov 39:16
4.
Mesh (2022-23) for ensemble & live-electronics / Nadar Ensemble 34:07
But the main point is that Stefan crosses very thin boundaries between the electronic and electroacoustic music and does it brilliantly. His compositions are precise and have the sense of deep insight how you can blend electronic and acoustic creating new quality. It adds up to the fact that he knows how to choose his collaborators in terms of their mastery of the individual instruments but also how they are driven by the composition.
There is certain harsh edge to those tracks too - they are not purely academic and they are taken away from the dry context of intellectually driven sound design.
Four compositions created between 2019 and 2023. A lesson in attention and deep listening.
