La Violence du Néant by BRUME
The idea of DIY in terms of small independent labels and working as a musician has been always really inspiring.
EE Tapes from Belgium conforms that profile and has some pretty amazing items in their catalogue. Run by Eriek Van Havere for some quite time now has worked out its own principles when it comes to choosing the artists. Hence I was pretty chuffed when there was a chance of a new release by none other than Christian Renou who has been active for a few decades as Brume.
And it happened!
New album "La Violence du Néant" is an astonishingly poignant narrative that leaves no doubts when it comes to Christian's work.
A unique piece where we have a sound design form that goes beyond the genres and beyond what can be easily labelled. An ambience made of a lacework that has so many hues, shades, also going beyond an abstractionism that is quite present in experimental postindustrial music that Renou's body of work was quite often automatically attached.
Christian uses every tool possible to make himself understood - the nuanced shadow play of his work is mesmerizing - it has a subtle, poetic feel to it but at the same time the narrative can get quite hectic.
The other thing worth mentioning is the production - it has a variety and a wide scale between low fi and hi fi which makes a difference in terms of listening experience.
Wonderful album that needs re-listening.
