Cold Shoulder by Oren Ambarchi & Will Guthrie
Oren Ambarchi, himself – a well established experimental musician has been active for nearly thirty
years now. He has been working with numerous musicians as well as working on his own. It is not his
first album with Will Guthrie and also – which is important for both artists and the listeners as well –
it doesn’t repeat what they have done before.
A tongue-in-cheek cover design can attract attention and possibly put you in a sort of funny mood as
well as distracting you, as listener.
A nicely edited vinyl contains two separate tracks where the amblings of Oren’s electric guitar
improvisations are blending perfectly with Will’s drumming.
It is a different benchmark that both of the musicians have set themselves up for – Oren is in a
different channel of dynamics and also phrasing of his tool. Will is every so attentive and using
different drumming techniques to keep up with quite hastily driven guitar.
Ambarchi goes way different way from what he has done before – there is less quietude and
unambiguous ambience here – there is more harmonies that have this impossibly driven aspect to
them. Where should we put his work – avant jazz rock, probably close to Henry Kaiser and Fred Frith
in a way? But is it worth doing? There is so much nuance in both of Will’s and Oren’s work – let’s just
leave it a that and enjoy the swirl, the surf, the sustenance of the notes.
