Ocean in A by Atonauer
Whenever I see an album labelled as ‘’ambient music’’ I approach it with great deal of caution. Labels that have been introducing us to new trailblazing type of music have led to many traps of albums that you can definitely access with much ease once you know what is it all about. But on the other hand, and especially now with AI in the scene there is so much albums that lack character and they are simply manufactured rather than composed and produced. Ambient is one of those elusive now genres that can be easily created using prompts.
Atonauer who is a project of Finnish artist and composer Lauri Wuolio falls into a different category. It has all the bearings of how a mysterious music that uses minimalism as a tool should have. It uses the idiom of oceanic world to convey something that actually has a bit different rhythm, quality and all the aspects of calm, tranquil ambient music.
Seven tracks of an average of 5, 6, 7 or even 8 minute long tracks fit the description of something austere and eerie presence that the music generates. With music, in general, these days, since it is becoming more and more generic and less and less comes across as a positive surprise. Atonauer works heavily on this aspect – the aspect of wonder, a surprise, some sort of a momentarily type of insight that the music can inspire.
The dynamics of the music changes here quite often – not only thanks to the volume or a pace but the different hues that the palette he operates offers.
A nice musical surprise in a form of beautifully edited vinyl record. Looking forward to hearing more from Atonauer.
