What We Talk About: Zera by Zera

An interesting project from Tapiwa Svosve and Steve Buchanan. It got me thinking on a few issues that I feel are often missing in music I listen to these days. First and foremost - the free range production that is present here. It is not only well done and very versatile but since the project can be placed somewhere between improvisational aspects of jazz, post-techno, electronic and plunderphonic music - it is not necessarily accessible for ears that want to easily classify things as such. It is a real outsider music that has its own rules and a project where the music speaks and takes the lead rather than the speech of overblown egos and some artistic sophisms. The over-intellectualised type I mean.

The content of the album is super dynamic - it has an interesting narrative that is often broken by clicks and cuts as well as using different quality of the material - sometimes we get improvisations that you can place between ethnic music and free jazz - sometimes it is a dense electronic music that has a post-techno feel to it - in its glitchiest and dirtiest forms.
