Echo Chamber by Evan Lipson

It's impossible to think of a better setting for a solo instrumental piece than a place with a natural acoustics. Public Eyesore, an ever busy label that has put so many American and other nationalities' musicians who both improvise and compose has released this gem of free improvisation by Evan Lipson.
The setting of this performance is an old, abandoned munition storage warehouse or ''bunkers'' as they are called locally in Chattanoooga, Tennessee. This one is located on the grounds of Enterprise South Nature Park in Chattanooga.

Evan's main instrument is double bass and the power of this music can be only equal to some historical facts related to the place where it was recorded.
It has historical connection with US foreign warfare as it was one of the biggest storage of TNT in US mainland between 1942 and 1977.
Evan uses variety of techniques to go about his business and he does it brilliantly. Not only he uses the natural character of the setting but he uses it as another instrument. In this context - the ambiance, the instrument, the mind over the matter and the musical instinct of the composer - they all work together towards the wholesome piece - one piece which lasts almost 44 minutes.
A deep listening piece, nuanced and detailed as much as you can possibly imagine.
It reminds me a little bit of 3/5/1 by Paul Wirkus / Uwe Schneider which was once released by Mik.Musik.
Dense and focused textures, working with natural setting and its features - all those and more are great enough excuse to plunge into this material.
