Tournures Cessent / Tournures Cessent Orchestrales by JEAN-LUC GUIONNET
This cd is quite unique in many ways.
First and foremost, it is a diary - a diary of a past year of 2015. An intimate musical entry, that happened before the pandemic, put in not really chronological order, bits and pieces that make up the picture of something quite dream-like.
The compositional tissue of this album is based on micro scale of sounds - imagine squelches, glitches, bits of audio dust that is being put together. But also the complexity of the composition being enhanced by the amount of musicians involved, at some point makes it quite a surprise entry - a change of narrative that is being used to convey something a bit more profound - the permeating question is: How to make this speck of dust: human life with all its insecurites, dangers, intimacies, nuances and details and put it into something that actually has some existential mass and weight.
Jean-Luc does it both with great attentive spirit and a master class touch - everything that is orchestrated with such amount of people involved has to be one way or another beautifully put. Also with the field recordings that lay a massive backdrop for the compositions. There is no single note here that is unnecessary - the whole listening experience is a deep plunge into a dream state - full of little bits that make you both surprised and even a bit scared - with the linearity that has so much to offer - to present... a pretty non-linear narrative.
A deep listening for a new - to revisit past without regrets and extract the essence of it so you could enjoy it here and now.
