An interesting music proposal from an Austrian musician that is certainly both puzzling and engaging
to the same extent.
House of Skin is a set of 9 tracks released on a cassette and released also as a Bandcamp DL.
Synthetic sounds that use oblique and not so transparent strategies that you could easily put into
synth pop but there is so much more to it.
Theatricality and pompous mood that steam from those compositions are undeniable but they
definitely represent more than just some travestations of 80’s art synth pop. The atmosphere and
the eeriness of the whole album is emphasized by lace-like careful arrangements and interesting
production.
Every track here is like a little chapter of the play. But what is the narrative and who are the actors?
It is all not so obvious. Yet, so entertaining, charming and in a surprising way – bears a mark of wit
and intelligence that is so rare these days.
House of Skin’s debut album ‘house of skin’ is a 9-track exploration of dub-infused sound alchemy
that was recorded and produced between 2022 and 2025. The Vienna-based musician draws on
both acoustic recordings and digital instruments, crafting a visceral sound design with a backdrop of
subtle gestures, phantasmic textures, and warped rhythmical experiments. Unexpectedly, the voice,
though often highly synthesized and unrecognizable, becomes a core element throughout certain
tracks on the album. It’s a voice searching for its footing in volatile soundscapes, merging with
jagged melodic motifs and askew beat structures. This body of work feels like watching a strange
entity evolve, or tracing an orbiting apparatus. ‘house of skin’ is a shapeshifting, submerged hollow,
stretching into the present tense, that halts linearity and pushes you into sideways time.
