 Lokalt Piano

by Morten Qvenild - Ugla Lyd

Morten Qvenild  is a pianist and composer from Nessoden, near Oslo in Norway. Lokalt Piano is his second solo album, following Personal Piano (Hubro, 2015).  Created, inspired by, and recorded in Qvenild’s green recording studio – UGLA LYD. There is a strong emphasis on his local neighbourhood, nature and everything within the vicinity of his studio.

Qvenild is known for his work with In the Country, Solveig Slettahjell, Susanne Sundfør, Arve Henriksen, Ingrid Olava, Nils Petter Molvær, Benedicte Maurset, and Susanna and the Magical Orchestra.

Eight compositions that encompass typical singer songwriter type of style. Morten can put approachable pop sensibilities together with grand piano melancholy, his own soulful voice and electronic experiments alongside with new wave synth parts and deconstructed piano parts.

What is beautiful about those compositions is that the experiments with the form and function are not done for the sake of experimenting but they are carefully assigned to what is happening within more traditional and tonal framework.

You can approach this album from different angles: looking at the composers’ abilities as a pianist, an art pop form, experimental new wave melancholy that chimes between the phrases or just as an open form album that blends and interweaves all those qualities together beautifully.
