MARK HARWOOD Offering LP Penultimate Press PP50
Mark Harwood, residing in Berlin and originally from Melbourne, Australia has been busy both as a musician and record label's boss, distributor, promotor of interesting music for way over two decades. His label: Penultimate Press is an excellent example how you can release highly amusing and rare music and be successful at the same time.
In the meantime he also records music as a solo artist. This is his second outing, and released on Penultimate as vinyl.
Recorded in Berlin 2021 and mixed/edited in London by no one else but Graham Lambkin, "Offering" is a beautifully eerie piece of wonder and magic. Using simple tools of pre-recorded sounds: both field recordings, spoken word, instruments: piano, acoustic guitar, bells and a bit of digital processing we get a narrative that is both complex and through its only seemingly simple structure gives an outlet to dip yourself into an auditory experience that is beyond the music itself.
It's an affirmation of human voice, concrete sounds and the rawness of this mix helps to understand how much of what we perceive through music is in its experience.
An abstract and at times a bit positively absurd soundscape. Drones and distant melodies, hums and musings. Magic of the sound so flexible that you can touch it.
