Thomas Von SmoGGG - El Topo Mechanico from Santa Sangre Magazine presents: Altered States of Reality compilation by Santa Sangre Magazine

I normally don't review single tracks from a hefty Various Artists compilations - rather than that the whole compilations. But since the track is really a full album length I thought I would give it a try.

Minimalistic theme played on ektar that introduces a evocative trumpet solo gives an interesting outlet to further preparations. It follows with some pretty glitchy electronic experiments both with texture and the rhythm that reminds me of the ensemble that Steven Stapleton brings to his NWW live shows but better, filtered more through electronic likes of Microstoria and Mouse on Mars. Idiosyncratic yet very involving.

Psychodelic and swampy improvisations go on a little bit further with Thomas sampling various sounds of objects and turning it into rhythm machines that generate the motoric, kraut-like dynamics of it. Trumpet adds more and more melancholy to this all.

When you ook at the whole track - it's just one long sentence with punctuation marks put for good syntax and understanding of the narrative. Feels like an improvised aspect is elevated here to the point where composition has been made consciously and above all to create a certain feeling and mood that is not lost in over-complication.
