Apnea by Alberto Boccardi
An exceptional album from Alberto Boccardi.
A deep reflection on the nature of existence - its renewal, the mortal coil of both birth and death and the nuances and the details of our lives.
Wrapped up in concise and short 9 etudes, recorded entirely in Sicily, in the house where Alberto's daughter was born, an album that doesn't weigh up to heavy on the audience; rather than making it viscerally difficult, Boccardi paces the rhythms and pulses in a very gentle way.
Slows down to speed up just a little bit. The transparent and glass-like vibrant textures make me think of old Werner Herzog movies where the narrative leads you through elusiveness and banality of simple movements and commotions to help you understand and grasp the point of the story and its milestones.
Apnea is a slow, electronic soundtrack which is so intimate and subtle that almost feels like you are touching it without any middle man, any other media, just using your auditory skills.
A rare occurrence of intimacy, personal approach and musical poetry in one.
