I Ching Shuffle by De Fabriek
De Fabriek is a quite an important part of Dutch experimental underground scene which is still alive and kicking and engaging on and on in releases of all sorts. De Fabriek (The Factory) comes fromZwolle and started in December 1977 as a collective project.
Currently De Fabriek consists mainly of Richard van Dellen, Louise Nanuru, Peter van Vliet, Martijn Hohmann and Peter Ehrmann.
This album released just beautifully by EE Tapes is a bit different pair of shoes. It is built around the mathematics of I Ching, an ancient Chinese interface for understanding reality which commonly is misunderstood as some sort of psychic oracle.
The concept of the album may at the beginning come across as a bit vague but when you delve a bit deeper you may use chaos magick practices as a key to it and also empowered by how you can read I Ching and use it as a tool for understanding and perceiving reality.
The whole album is 64 short tracks which are a shot through so many different styles and narratives that are just impossible to put under one label. It is not only experimental drone ambient, plunderphonics, new wave, industrial in many forms, spoken word, aspects of experimental drone noise industrial and all sorts of acoustic and leftfield open form experiments ( even a bit of drum and bass ) but there is a drive to find some common denominator in all this, at a first glance chaotic album.
Imagine postcards from the last 48 years of De Fabriek's existence - through different and changing forms of expression, different mediums, different viewpoints and strategies for composing or and assembling sounds into compositions, tableaux and other forms. One penetrating another, and moving on to another one.
How to approach this album besides the key of I Ching? There are many ways. Think of it as a radio show but done not to just present and promote but to drive through different styles that may be not so valid today but definitely worth going through and learning how they have worked in a different circumference of musical events. The assembly of artists participating is just impossible.
