LOS PANTEROS 24 Ribs ٢٤ ضُلع MC Archipel Editions/Aldarrax Editions/Famous Grapes Recordings AE003/ADX_09/FRG03
Los Panteros are composer/bassist Tony Elieh as well as songwriter/vocalist Aya Metwalli. It started with the Irtijal music festival where both Ava and Tony were commissioned to play an improvisational session in Berlin edition in 2020.
The project was developed during a residency within the framework of the Phonetics festival in St. Denis in France, then finalized and debuted at Morphine Raum in Berlin after the project was granted the Musikfonds e.V. by the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM).
Metwalli has a background in Egyptian music - she was trained to sing a vast repertoire of classical music from Egypt. Elieh, on the other hand started Scrambled Eggs - one of the most important punk bands in Lebanon. It helped him to explore other techniques and work out more experimental approach.
The result of their collaborative work is astounding mix of melodic singing of Aya, which is based in classical Egyptian music with Tony's electronic soundscapes which are both rhythmical and composed very carefully around themes that Aya is leading.
This impossible blend works perfectly and sounds so much more fresh thanks to an excellent idea behind it.
Aya gives a performance of both resonance and evocative lines. Tony is always following her step with accordance and not being afraid of putting the listener out of limbo with even more distorted and harsher textures.
