Vivid Peace Restored by Stina Stjern
Stina Stjern has a steady background in a more classical music education and jazz music which she studeied in Trondheim, Norway. She started her musical path in a rock band called Supervixen but her career was far from predictable.
Her new album is a lace tissue of cassette preparations, modulations, layering - she used tape recorders, walkmans, fx, synths and last but definitely not least her own voice.
In a world where everything can be easily edited and re-worked Stina choise to work with an analogue medium such as cassette which is not necessarily easy to work with as it is highly unpredictable.
Her linear narrative created by cassette looping, playing and interfering has its jolts, swirls, jumps and errors but it never ceases to amaze how much you can accomplich with this medium.
It's a dense tissue and each track on this vinyl is elaborate and carefully worked through and composed. Stina's voice is a bit distant but always present. It's a hauntologic machine with references to field recording in Spontaneous Deep Dive and also quite a rhythmical structure with a beat that altogether sound like a more austere and un-obvious dream pop.
What a richness in sound and such a unrestrained power of compositional awareness and inspiration! Definitely one of the albums of the year.
