"Pory..." by Piotr Komosiński/Jerzy Mazzoll
Piotr Komosiński whom I know from his previous record took a deep nosedive to create an album which is based on calendar - a trip through all the months of the year. With changing moods and different approaches towards composition but also conveying different energies underlaying each of the month tracks as well as something which is even more challenging - taking it up together with his partner in crime here - Jerzy Mazzoll, a man, a legend, one who was breaking through new ideas to composed experimental and free music, lauded in 1990's Poland as one of the innovators of a new wave called by some critics "yass", in my opinion has done actually much more than that.
Both of them come from two generations overlapping each other - Jerzy born in 1960's, Piotr born in 1970's bring a bit different sensitivity and approach to the table. They have their own voices - in case of Jerzy it's clarinets and reeds, in case of Piotr - it's bass instruments.
But when it comes to the actual composition - they blend so many different elements together with refinement and intelligence - it doesn't drop at all from their line of thinking together and bringing the whole album to the point of something extraordinary.
The elements we have here are illustrative, cinematic landscapes that are created by subtle presence of synths, ethnic feel to the clarinet that Jerzy operates, groove that is created between the double bass that Piotr is running and chord progressions that he plays on keys as well as kalimba. But most of all - it is a poetic way towards creating each track - subtlety and lack of dissonance that puts everything in the right spots.
Piotr has this unique, almost chamelon-like characteristics of a musician composer that makes him both flexible enough and being able to touch many points so that the contents he creates can be embellished and resonate with so many different moods, climes and so on so forth. It's a rare advantage of a musician that can embrace the whole of his arsenal and use it.
