People on Sunday by Domenique Dumont

A new album from Domenique Dumont takes us on a voyage to poetic and not-so-obvious exotica.

"People on Sunday" has a very obvious reference though. It's a soundtrack to a 1930's silent movie entitled variably as Menschen am Sonntag, Les Hommes le Dimanche and People On Sunday. A stunning work of German cinema in a difficult times of Hitler, based on the script of Billy Wilder. It's a story of a group that presents an everyday life in Weimar-era Germany - just before the grim dictatorship.

A strange occurence in the times of global pandemic made Domenique think of the present rather than the past and inspired her to think of music that has an element of humanitarian approach and optimistic opening. The music that the cd and vinyls contain is a minimalistic synth polyphony - songs that are both lightweight and deep. They have this excellent blend of melancholy and softness and understanding of things that can help you to bend and flex over the contents that has so much to offer.

The message that Dumont conveys is a reflection on reality. A reaching out towards the socio-political verse in the tissue of reality but put out in the background of something that actually has more poetic, open form approach.

A pleasure to listen.
