The Shape of Solitude by VIDNA OBMANA & SERGE DEVADDER
Vidna Obmana is a milestone of atmospheric ambient and beyond - through all these years providing a quality albums and yet quite open to experimentation and nuanced way of composing. On a new album "The Shape of Solitude" he is joining forces with Serge Devadder who is a Belgian guitar player and synthetist.
First thing that strikes you here is the subtlety and depth of the sound that they both present - the collaboration is mesmerizing and poetic yet very accurate, tight in terms of production and arrangement and not overdone by any baroque build-ups.
Vidna is a studio wiz kid and you can feel it but not by fact that it is overblown but a sure-hand minimalistic impressionism.
The tracks are very sensibly timed and most of the synth parts are pure joy to listen. Preparations and guitar work are poetic and detailed in how everything is paced. The soundtrack for both - listeners who don't know Vidna's body of work and those who know it - will make a difference by a deep listening and somewhat relaxing process of acknowledging some uneasiness that stuck in between the verses of this soundscape poetry. Released by Zoharum who never fails to disappoint when it comes to their publishing choices.
