AGENESIS by Robert Curgenven
The newest album by Robert Curgenven is out now on Cloudchamber Recordings, released as a cd with a stylish modern arabesque cover.
An elaborate piece of work that blends both audio art and field recording as well as modern composition and squirmish with drone noise form. Robert has based his work on field recording research from such remote locations as Northerm Territory, Australia and Tokyo, Japan. He used the recordings of pipe organs from Kylemore Abbey in Connemara and St Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork and blended them together with all sorts of electronics, no-input mixing desk, dubplates.
The result is both positively challenging, in terms of how he operates the sound itself but also the equalisation, the contrast, volume and the compression - on the level of technology. But sure enough this album also helps you to understand something quite transcendental - it has heaps of melancholy and poetics of sound that is uncanny for a social media world that operates on the attention span of an amoeba.
It is a huge bravery and boldness to put yourself on a challenge to create such a piece that is both expanding itself while you listen. It is not always comfortable but sure enough it stays with you for a longer period of time. Definitely one of the albums of the year.
