Hill Country Piano by Dan Melchior
Dan Melchior is a true original. He was born in London but has lived in the states ever since.
His musical activity has been a path from working with Billy Childish and Holly Golightly within the garage idiom of music.
Equally idiomatic and diverse have been the labels he has worked with , including Sympathy for the record industry, Siltbreeze, Kye, Ultra Eczema, Chocolate Monk, Ever/Never, Feeding Tube and Penultimate Press, and more.
he is not a classically trained piano player but throughout the years he has created his own language of composition and expression on this instrument.
His discography is nevertheless huge and orbits around so many different genres and approaches that can put in shame a lot of more promoted artists and musicians.
His new album released by Penultimate ''Hill country piano'' is a beautiful take on simplistic on the outside but lace-complexed arrangements where the piano is the main character.
The narrative is a sombre invocation to something delicate, some sort of personal space that is not polluted with over-expanding narrative of modern life. It is an invitation to a bit of introspection and celebrating a bit different type of entertainment - reflective and meditative.
A nice balance between an experiment and something in a form of not so easy listening.
A great introduction to somewhat gigantic discography of this horribly and undeservedly underrated artist.
