Hubert Kostkiewicz - Four Guitar Solos For Bemma Bar by Pointless Geometry
Pointless Geometry is as ever churning quality releases and so is the story with this one.
Guitar seems to be on and off instrument when it comes to music in general and experimental and independent music specifically. You ask yourself specific questions as an independent musician: Does it make sense to publish my work at all since the distribution and even interest is rather poor? Is this or any other musical current, movement and a phase is merely just a fad? Is it profoundly important to present your ideas in the form of music or maybe it just serves the purpose of a therapy?
The man behind this album is Hubert Kostkiewicz whom I know thanks to the Kurws and Atol Atol, both ensembles in their own right, one way or another related or/and based on improvised open form that goes beyond variety of genres but at the end of the day, arrives at pretty impressive results and also shows the open-mindedness of the people who create(d) those bands.
Hubert has put four improvisations on this lovely cassette - each no longer than six and something or five and something minutes.
His style is pretty physical and derivative of hands on approach that you can recognise when you listen to Derek Bailey, Andy Moor or also Brian Ruryk, the least recognised of those three. But obviously these are just the signposts - more of a label files rather than a proper description of Kostkiewicz's style.
Each etude has a bit different tone to it. Guitar Solo 1 is more about the drive and frenzy of aggressive interaction between Hubert and his instrument. The next one is more relaxed and focused on subtle percussive effects. But also has a bit more contemplative tone to it. The third one is probably my favourite here - it has this natural glitch to it and somewhat error aesthetic links that makes me feel like it is a session between Jan St Werner, Andy Thoma and Markus Popp but taking their styles into the frame of improvisational idioms of electro-acoustic music.
The last track is something that brings on an elusive moods of melancholy and has a very cinematic feel to it.
Hubert Kostkiewicz is one of those polymaths who are unpredictable in the most of positive ways. I am hoping he is going to challenge himself to produce quality stuff as he always does. Definitely one of those people who sound great both in a studio and live.
