Àlea by Andrea Giordano
Nothing beats a fully fledged chamber orchestra ensemble and even better when we have a pretty young composer who has a great deal to offer.
Andrea Giordano is one of those people. She works through understanding of her own roots - Piedmonte, and the language that she was learning through her grandmother - a Gallo Romance Piedmontese language that she used in her previous work - librettos of poetry she has sung before.
For Àlea she was looking towards making it even more personal.
The output is just impossible. She created the whole universe, composing and arranging it and taking on the central role as a singer and playing organetto.
She asked to create a commission with Vieri Cervelli Montel, a composer and friend of both Giordano and Giachero, to write texts in Italian. Andrea and Montel translated those texts together into her hometown dialect based on her interviews with scholars and family.
Musically it is a pretty straightforward journey - linear in its own sense but also full of subtle nuances and dramatic passages.
Definitely one of most unique musical adventures.
Andrea Giordano is an experimental musician, singer, and composer from Cuneo, Italy and based in Oslo. In works characterized by rich chamber orchestration, Giordano investigates how acoustic instruments can be augmented by electronic means. Since 2018, Giordano has been creating vocal works in Piedmontese, drawing upon ongoing research into her family’s dialect.
Giordano’s recent work includes the large ensemble project Àlea, the solo project “exapist euforia,” duo collaborations with Fanny Meteier and Eivind Lønning; and an upcoming interdisciplinary project with Kjell Bjørgeengen. Giordano completed her undergraduate work at Siena Jazz University and continued with a master’s in jazz and performance at the Norwegian Academy of Music, where she was a student of Sidsel Endresen, and where she is currently pursuing a bachelor’s in composition.
